What’s the Secret to Happy Life?
Don’t go out without your raincoat! Brush your teeth.
Have you cleaned up after yourself?
Surely these can’t be the secrets to a happy life?
You could be forgiven for thinking happiness has everything to do with things like how much money, how lucky, and attractive looking you are. At least, these are the messages you and I get repeatedly nearly every day of our life.
But I don’t believe they are the answer. For starters, if they were truly the secrets to happiness, then many of us couldn’t possibly be happy. Not even for a bit. Right now there are people living in poverty, with virtually nothing to their name; never mind looks, fame, and fortune. Yet, sometimes at least, these people are happy.
Which leads me to suggest a different reason. Most definitely, things can bring us a lot of happy pleasures. But, there’s more to a happy life than a good night out or a glam outfit, isn’t there? Being happy is also something we produce in response. That kind of happiness produces something more lasting than thrills and fun. It gives you a feeling of satisfaction.
So when we live our own version of life, we can, if we steer toward the things we believe in, build up our satisfaction levels. You can know the contentment of being pleased, simply because you are living true to yourself. Being authentic and sincere, or working in a career; doing something you believe in. Or perhaps because you love your children who just went out the door with a raincoat, teeth brushed, and their things put away. Oops! Did I just reveal a secret about living a happy life?
