I always wanted a happy ending ... Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle and end.

That Excellent Horse Like Lady

July 22nd, 2012 ~ Est. reading time: 1 min, 54 secs

Every excellent horse like lady needs to keep herself looking the part…

Things certainly are done differently in North Korea. After making a pop song clip called “Excellent Horse Like Lady”, Kim Jong Un’s new squeeze is catching worldwide attention.

Perhaps getting tagged with the title of most “excellent horse like lady “would be more than plenty. But this mystery woman seems to have won the affections of none other than North Korea’s “Dear Leader” himself.  Which only goes to show that even despotic tyrants still want someone to love them.

In this rigidly Stalinist society, a swirl of color, smiling face, or waving streamer must be something of a relief. Otherwise, how else can you explain why a bunch of factory women spooling cotton and prancing about in the “Excellent Horse Like Lady” song clip could become so popular?

Perhaps it’s just the singer, Ms Hyon Song-wol’s, bubbly enthusiasm? But, whatever it is, she has certainly won Kim Jong Un over. Appearing close by his side at state functions, this most “excellent horse like lady” is causing something of a stir.

Now I’d like to think that North Korea’s “Dear Leader” is breaking all the rules of protocol for that utterly imprudent thing called love. But, from a distance (and with me living on the bottom Edge of the World), it’s hard to really tell.

I mean, it takes a bit of imagination to picture yourself falling under the spell of a most “excellent horse like lady” in the first place. Still, if anything can penetrate such a tough, unflinching culture, love can do it. Despite its complete inability to fight wars, stare down tyrants, and win battles, love remains a curiously complex force to be reckoned with.

You might want to say, “But Feegs, hang on. This isn’t love. It’s lust.” But can we really know for sure?  Love has the power to soften hearts and open doors in the most surprising places. We abandon people forever for their wrongdoings. But love doesn’t. Love, as opposed to infatuation, has that compelling intensity that demands an answer. Maybe, in this case, the response will be more hard-heartedness and cruelty. Or, perhaps, it could lead to a softening and the possibility of something more humane.

Can affection for an “excellent horse like lady” really make much difference? History will judge for us. But, somehow, in the kooky and unsettling realm of North Korea, I somehow feel it has more potential than another dozen armoured divisions, or a fresh detachment of diplomatic Attaches. Let’s dare to hope for a little miracle in the heart of North Korea’s “Dear Leader” for the sake of all his people.
