With spirit, it's amazing what you can do.

With spirit, it’s amazing what you can do.

What is spirit? And what makes a sense of it so important?

Quite apart from religious meaning, having spirit describes something enduring in our attitude that is widely regarded with respect.

By spirit, I mean that sense of resilience you and I have to the hardships of life. It’s a kind of inner toughness that handles difficulty and even allows us to bounce back, despite the onslaught of our day-to-day pressures.

Spirit in this context is about robustness with the ability to make meaning out of tough situations that may, in themselves, have no meaning at all.

This inner resilience to whatever life dishes out on a daily basis is a remarkable feature of people who achieve, and, not-surprisingly, it creates a strong sense of confidence. Like the can do spirit, it’s inherently attractive and has a way of bringing out the best in others.

As a quality, I like to roll this idea of spirit together with courage, and determination. In that form, it’s fortitude, representing one of the most powerful aspects of character that any one of us can ever possess.

Though derided by some with cynicism, spirit is a catalyst to making good things happen. Instilling belief, confidence, and an infectious enthusiasm, spirit has a way of overcoming obstacles for breakfast!

To go into any major undertaking without the resoluteness of spirit leaves us unsure of what we are doing and whether we are committed or not. But when we are equipped with its stability, we see possibilities and naturally find ourselves seeking achievement.

In this respect, a sense of spirit is far more potent than a positive attitude. Nothing needs be seen with rose-colored glasses. Instead, there is room to be pragmatic and not assume that everything is great.

When you hit the wall of difficulty, or run out of even the last vestiges of happy feeling, the inner durability of spirit will see you through The more of it you have, the further you can go. With spirit, you can turn the unreasonable into something entirely reasonable.  Which, given its subjective nature, is exactly what you’d expect.
