Spam Lies And Arithmetic

August 28th, 2012 ~ Est. reading time: 1 min, 49 secs

Some comments are worth about this much.

How’s this, “I truly appreciate this post. I have been looking everywhere for this. Thank goodness I found it on Bing”? Or, how about, “I really appreciate this post. I have been looking all over for this.Thank goodness I found it on Yahoo”?

These are spam comments and the blogosphere is bulging to the rafters with them. “Hello I just would like to give a huge thumbs up for the great info you have here on this post… Oh, did I say I really appreciate this post? I have been looking everywhere for this! Thank goodness I found it on Bing/Yahoo/AOL/shoved down the back of the couch.”

One or two of these phony posts of flattery aren’t going to bother anyone too much. But multiply, “I truly appreciate this post. I have been looking everywhere for this. Thank goodness I found it on Bing” by a million, no, a trillion times and you can see how it undermines human communication.

Where do these sneaky blog bullies come from? Well, according to Wikipedia, they ply their fiendish trade from India, Russia, Vietnam, South Korea, Indonesia, China, Brazil, & the US. Hidden beneath cheery remarks like, “I truly appreciate this post. I have been looking everywhere for this thank goodness I found it on Bing” and then put linking code on your site to Viagra, dodgy watches, and fake weight loss pills. These calculating criminals crunch the vast numbers on the Internet to spread their stranglehold across every legitimate site worldwide, to give their links some cred.

This means hugely popular blogs like:

to name a few, are constantly being bombarded with stupid spam. When they get their daily dose of thousands (maybe millions) of “I truly appreciate this post. I have been looking everywhere for this.Thank goodness I found it on Yahoo, Bing, or whatever”, they have to engage people, implement systems, and apply continual effort to clear the deck. And that’s just spam, not email fraud, spam literature, malware, trolling, junk mail, and all the rest of the mess.

So, spare a thought for the secret battles to bring you info. In the silent arithmetic war of codswallop versus communication, you may find your own attempt at posting comments sometimes becomes an unhappy casualty of deletion. But when you have to sift through umpteen permutations of “I truly appreciate this post. I have been looking everywhere for this & thank goodness I found it whilst trying to rifle through your things” you’ll understand. Phew!  I’m glad that at least you’re real.
