Courage!

Attacking your fears with action works wonders.

Attacking your fears with action works wonders.

When the going gets tough, it’s good to sit down and have a cup of tea and a biscuit. Well, it would be, except that’s not an option.

You have to have courage to face what life brings. Whether as a result of your own decisions or because life worked out that way, there are times when you need to stand firm.

I believe we don’t talk about courage enough. Then, when we do, it’s in gender-biased ways (like being a muscled bound “he man”). But isn’t that’s ridiculous? Especially given most of us live urban lives where problems need good communication and negotiation skills (not big flexing neck muscles).

Courage is required for a whole host of reasons, even on a daily basis. Somebody berates you, you didn’t pass, you’re struggling to get a job, your teen tells you that she hates you or, you are facing the reality that a loved one is dying. At times, life can be incredibly tough and it’s easy to feel it’s all too much.

Sometimes it is. Yet, that’s never a reason to surrender your pluck.

You’ve got to face difficulties or they will undermine you. What’s worse than standing up to hardship? Running away. Because every time we give up we plant seeds of failure that not only rehearse that process, they reinforce our self-concept as being incapable (even though that’s not true).

Dare to do what scares you. Because, having a go tames your fears. You grab back self-control, leaving you feeling immediately more empowered.

That speech you need to make? Do it. That race you are worried about losing? Register. That outfit/gathering/project/book/hobby/date/call are waiting for you to act on them the moment you choose.

Yes, you may fail. Life is risky. But not trying is failure for sure. Stop running, turn around, and start heading straight toward your challenges.

Courage is yours. Fortune favors the bold, and now, it is time you dared to do what seems too hard to. Make a list of everything you barely dare. Today. Now. Because achieving is not someone else’s role. It is totally up to you.
