Bed Means What Exactly?

September 22nd, 2012 ~ Est. reading time: 1 min, 45 secs

What makes bed so special?

Here’s to the humble bed. But like breeds of dog, beds come in all shapes and sizes and get used in all kinds of ways. Travelling, for example, certainly highlights their diversity. Getting a bed for the night in Timaru, New Zealand, got us a foam mattress inside a rusty old van with no wheels, in a ramshackle barn. While, in the US, a “bed” translated into two massive king-sized couches at opposite ends of a bedroom.

Bed was a rolled out straw mat with optional solid neck rests in Japan. While in Germany, a bed translated into two boxed mattresses butted up together. With high timber surrounds bisecting the middle, snuggling up meant lying across a hard timber divide.

Then there’s also the way beds get used. In some places, beds get round the clock wear and tear. Like hot-desking, shift sleeping means people take turns to get a share of their bed. Some beds, meanwhile, are places for family to gather. While, others are purely commercial, with tariffs strictly by the hour.

Even beds themselves vary enormously. Quite apart from waterbeds, innersprings, foams, straw, and inflatables, there’s also the way they are made up and located. That means two identical beds can be poles apart in terms of comfort.

Though merely a piece of furniture, beds need to keep us comfy for hours at a stretch. So, a bed must satisfy an essential and unique part of our daily life. A bed that serves us well with comfort, support, and coziness will be the place of many happy memories. Indeed, the more you think about beds and how much of life plays out in them, the more respect and affection you’re likely to give them.

Shoving a double bed up against a damp wall, or leaving it unmade and grubby is sure to undermine anything resembling a good night’s sleep. While a bed that’s nestled in an inviting space and decked with clean, fresh linen is delightfully enticing.

Whether it’s to sleep, talk, read, snuggle, or love, a bed should be in a safe place where you can let go of your cares and feel at peace. All the fanciest features won’t add up to much if you left feeling unprotected. So, whatever your bed means to you, give it due regard, and make it the coziest nest you can. Because no matter how humble or grand a bed may be, its purpose is to offer you contentment and rest for as long as you shelter within.
